Guindy National Park was opened in the year 1977 and is at a distance of 12km away from chennai central railway station. It is the 8th smallest national park in India. The annual visitor of the zoo is approx 700,000. The zoo includes 130 species of birds, 14 species of mammals, over 60 species of butterflies and spider. The zoo is under Tamil Nadu Forest Department.

The major attraction of the zoo is the blackbuck, chital or spotted deer, jackal, small Indian civet, common palm civet, bonnet macaque, hyena. The park also has black-naped hare and several species of bats and rodents. There are wide range of birds like grey partridge, crow pheasant, parrot, quail, paradise fly-catcher, black-winged kite, Honey Buzzard, pariah kite.
