Sachin Tendulkar is probably India’s most loved and respected cricketer and second to the great Sir Donald Bradman. Though he is acclaimed all over the world for his excellent batting heroics that stand out in his career graphs, this is only half the story told. Tendulkar is more than just batting heroics or added bowling prowess and a maverick fielder. He is an intellectual cricketing mind that has stood the test of time and borne the expectation of a cricket crazy billion. Those expectations have been articulated in runs and strike rates the expectation does not find mention only the effort. This Cricketing genius stands beyond as one of the finest men to have graced the twenty two yards.
EARLY YEARS- Sachin Tendulkar was born into a humble middle class Rajaput Sarawak Brahmin Family. His father was a revered Marathi poet. Sachin siblings are Ajit, Nitin and Savita. It was however his brother Ajit who identified the proclivity that young Sachin had towards the game of cricket and encouraged him. Even at that tender age Tendulkar was fascinated with the game of cricket and heard and watched the game closely. He was also inclined to other sports for instance tennis and John McEnroe. Though they share extremely different characteristics Sachin picked up the approach of the American tennis ace towards playing.
Getting a coach for Sachin was not easy. Ramakant Achrekar, denied Sachin admission into his coaching classes as he did not have the spark. But this did not deter the spirit of Tendulkar who surged forward and practiced hard not in desperate bid to be coached, but because of his insatiable love for the game. The youngster was warmly received by Ramakant Achrekar and it was later on his insistence that the cricketer joined the NCA at Bangalore. The teenager aspired to be an bowler, but he was again deemed unfit to be fast bowler and returned back only to practice harder and work to be the batsman today.
Later Dennis Lillie stated that in an interview to a Mumbai based newspaper, that Sachin is not a batsman but in all aspects is one of the greatest cricketing minds. Had I accepted him as a bowler he would have excelled in achieving even more great standards. He is a genius cricketing mind beyond measure of words.
STYLE OF PLAY – Tendulkar is more than just a cricketer. He is a deeply inspired individual. The experiences and the mindset that he kept right from his early days were instrumental in his success. For instance three characteristic that are lesser known about the cricketer. Firstly temperance and patience that meant being cool in even the most torrid of situation without panicking. Secondly placing a price for your wicket, in an age where the price of wicket is given little due Tendulkar learned to price his wickets. Much like the coins that Ramakant Achrekar placed on his stumps and which remained his priced possesion.
He is the most priced scalp any player can ever expect of getting. Finally his hunger to play the game that has remained the same over the last twenty four years. Notwithstanding a broken bloody noise, fierce bowling, angling and criticisms that are showered on him as a result of his long withstanding career. Yet excellence and sucess has never eluded him. The highest run getter in Test, one dayers and above all he has written each and every record in the book and has made his own.
CAREER- Sachin made a name for himself right from the early days in the Mumbai circles. He never has great ambitions but was able to achieve the smallest goals and move forward, cementing his place in school team, Mumbai’s elite Ranji team and finally in Indian colors. This was ably visibly when he made in to the final 11 that toured Pakistan after an extended break of 17 years in 1989. This prodigy was up facing the stalwarts of Pakistan cricket the fast battery that devoured every opposition beyond limits.
In his first innings Sachin was able to score only 15 however he got his first half century on the tour. The tour is also known for his resilience that challenged the opposition despite being hit by beamer which resulted in a bloody noise. He continued to play and smacked the opposition. A fitting example of controlled aggression. This marked the arrival of the Tendulkar. But his patting prowess was recognized by the cricketing world with his century against England with final test at Manchester in 1990. From that moment on Sachin became a force to reckon with.
CAREER HIGHS AND LOWS- There was never a doubt of Tendulkar talent and that made him rise to heights unthinkable of. The youngster became the fulcrum of the Indian batting line. The entire period of the nineties Tendulkar dominated world cricket and set standards. For instance he was made captain of the Indian team in the 1993 series of New Zealand. However captaincy remained a vulnerability for Tendulkar who was forced to give captaincy all throughout his career.
However he continued to remain the bastion of batting scoring briskly. India was guaranteed of a win with each performance of the maestro. However this dependence was also a vulnerability. The example of the same was the semifinal of the 1996 Wills World Cup that saw India perish like a pack of cards after Tendulkar's dismissal. Or the test matches against Pakistan and the West Indies that showed how much the team was dependant on the maestro. Even the famous 2003 final exhibited the same despite the fact that the team had built in a strong batting line with some good names. This also proves his presence in the dressing room irrespective of his performances. However Tendulkar has risen from the ashes to deliver many a performance. Be it his 100 after attending his father’s funeral in the 1999 world cup.
The performances after relived from captaincy and most of all the awe inspiring innings played against opponents in the face of opposition, criticism and even chants. He also fulfilled his greatest dream of wining India the coveted ICC cricket World Cup in 2011, after making 5 appearance in World Cups and much like the fairy tale scripted by Imran Khan who was instrumental in winning the world cup in his last appearance in the grandest stages of them all.
RECORDS- Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar and records are synonymous with each other. Tendulkar is open book of records. Despite the fact that his first One day hundred came at 79 innings, he is the holder of the record for the most amount of runs in both tests and one day cricket. He also holds the record for the most appearance in both forms of cricket and the most centuries.
A hundred in total international centuries. This century of centuries like Bradman’s average would remain unchallenged as a feat of excellence that every batsman would aim at. His cricketing genius is unparalleled and it is no fluke that he also has 153 wickets in the 436 matches played so far. An interesting part of his bowling stats is that both best wicket halls in one day cricket has come against the mighty Australians and both at the same venue, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium , Kaloor, Kochi. He also has 45 test scalps from the test matches he has played.
PERSONAL LIFE:- Sachin married Anjali Mehta a pediatrician in the summer of 1995. The couple have have two children Sara and Arjun. Sachin has always kept his personal life out of the glaring media limelight.
CRITICISM AND CONTROVERSIES- One of the best gentlemen to have graced the game. Sachin has remained away from controversies and criticism. However the most unfortunate of incidents was the ball tampering incident that shocked the cricketing fraternity. A case of utter misjudgment by the Match referee. Tendulkar once maintained his stand and gracefully accepted the ban without appealing against the same.
The second notable controversy was his permission for exemption of taxes for his Ferrari His fan following has also been under criticism for hype and being over hyped so much so that he is regarded as God. While other still agree that he has and remained an integrating factor.
PRESENT TIMES-Sachin was nominated by the president for the post of Member of Parliament a Privilege given to sportsmen and eminent personalities. His name was also suggested for the Bharat Ratna India’s highest Civilian honor. Of late however the cricketer has faced a tough time on the cricket field with poor performance. Many stalwarts like Sunil Gavaskar felt its time the maestro reconsider his decision to play. However he also essayed an important role in his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians with two back-to back champions trophy titles and maiden IPL title.
