Rani Mukerji, after leading ladies in the industry also experienced a time of critical acclaim when there was virtually a drought in terms of commercial success. However the last few years the actress has made a hard hitting comeback and hinted and has been extremely selective in terms of her scripts and the projects. She set for two back to back releases and is eager to prove a point. However no one can reminisce the distinctive that the actress has rendered to her roles.
Rani Mukerji Early Life- Rani Mukerji was born into a family that was deeply affiliated to cinema. Her father Ram Mukerji is a retired film director and founder of the Filmalaya Studios, while her mother Krishna was a playback Singer. Her brother is a producer turned director Raja Mukerji and her maternal aunt Debashree Mukerji is national award winning actress. Her cousins are Kajol, Tanisha and Mohnish Behl. Rani schooled at the Maneckji Cooper High School in Juhu, Mumbai and later enrolled in Mithibhai College.
Rani Mukerji Film Career- The actress started her film career doing a small role in her father’s film Biyer Phool (1992). Rani made her appearance in a Hindi film five years later with the film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997). Her performance as a rape victim was well accepted but however the film fared poorly at the box office. Rani then went on to do the film Ghulam (1998) opposite Aamir Khan. The film did moderate business at the box office; however the film song "Aati Kya Khandala" was noticed. However Rani Mukerji tasted success with Karan Johar’s Directorial debut “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”. The film starred ShahRukh Khan, Kajol. The film was a massive commercial hit.
However two years following the movies the actress films fared average at the box office. In 2000 she starred opposite Kamal Hassan in the film Hey Ram which was commercially acclaimed the world over and was India’s official entry for the Oscars in the subsequent year. Her next Film Badal (2001) opposite Bobby Deol did not do that well at the box office. However her performance in Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega fetched a nomination for best supporting actress. In the same year she also did Abbas Mustan’s romantic drama Chori Chori Chupke Chupke alongside Salman Khan and Preity Zinta.
The actress then starred in Saathiya which was commercial success. Of the films that the actress did in the year 2003, the film Chalte Chalte opposite Shah Rukh Khan was well accepted. Her films Yuva and Hum tum, Veera Zaara (2004) that she did well at the box office. Her role of Pakistani Lawyer in the film Veer Zaara which was well accepted by critics. In the following year 2005 the actress starred in high profiles films like Black, Bunty aur Babli and Mangal Pandey the rising. Her performance in the film Black is considered as one of the best in her career where she essayed the role of a bilnd and deaf women. Critics showered praise on her for her performance.
Bunty aur Babli was a commercial hit and Mangal Pandey the rising saw the actress essayed a the role of a prostitute and a village women in the movie Paheli that saw her was well accepted. The year was also specially as Rani Mukerji appeared in different films doing different role and did complete just to characterization of her characters. In the following year she starred in the multistarrer Kabhi Alvidha Na Kehna (2006). The film opened up to mixed reviews at the box office but was an international hit grossing in the foreign markets. Baabul which was the actress’s second film that year also did farely well. In 2007 she had films like Saawariya and Laga Chunari Mein Daag.
Her only release in 2008, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, failed to do well. In 2009, Rani was seen in Dil Bole Hadippa!, Although these string of films was a testament of Rani’s skill as an actress that did not do commercial well. Critics were halfhearted in their praises. The actress did not do any film in the year 2010. Rani Mukerji returned to the box office with No One killed Jessica. Based on the infamous Jesssica Lall murder case. Critics appraised the actress for her inhibited acting in the role of broadcast journalist. Rani won Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress Award for this film.
Rani Mukerji Upcoming Movies- The actress has two back to back releases slated for the year end. Firstly Aiyyaa where she essays the role of Marathi girl who falls in love with a Tamil boy. Her love interest is played by South Indian hunk and newcomer Prithviraj. Her next Film Taalash Starring opposite Aamir Khan which is slated for release on the 30th November 2012. She has also lent her voice for the character of Tina in Koochie Koochie Hota Hai which is animated version of her first hit film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Rani Mukerji personal life- Rani Mukerji has always being tight lipped as far as her relationships are concerned and about her personal life. Despite constant speculation and media hounding she has refused to clarify on these personal issues. However at one point in time the actress clarified that she is now even more open to the media. Another fact about Rani Mukerji is that she uses the English transliteration of Mukerji instead of Mukerji . However she is has not clarified about her stand on this fact. She is completely reclusive and resides in Juhu with her parents. Now she is reported to be dating Aditya Chopra.
Rani Mukerji Philanthropy- Rani Mukerji has lent her support for charitable causes. In March 2004, Mukerji visited the desert of Rajasthan, where she spent a day at the army training base to boost the morale of the jawan troops. The visit was conducted for a NDTV show, Jai Jawan, on which entertainers and actors visit Indian troops. In February 2005, Mukerji performed at the HELP! Telethon Concert to help raise money for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake alongside several other Bollywood stars. Rani Mukerji Controversies- Though the actress has stayed away from the glare of the media she has been no stranger as far as controversy is concerned. Rani Mukerji has been linked up to actors Govinda and Abhishek Bachchan. She has never spoken and clarified about such issues. The actress shared a very friendly relationship with co actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan that soured. The reasons for the souring of friendship are still oblivious. In terms of work related controversies the actress had made a statement in an interview that she regarded Adolph Hitler as her role model.
She was forced to make a public apology. During the filming of her movie Laga Chunari Mein Daag at Banaras her security guards thrashed the crowd that gathered. She was again asked to make a public apology. In her film No One Killed Jessica she received flak for the cussing. There was also a particular scene when the actress made an indecent gesture. To avoid further speculations about the scene, the board issued a statement that this is not apt for family viewing especially if the obscene gestures would not be censored.
