Probably one of the most versatile actors India has produced. Anil Kapoor epitomizes a distinctive acting talent and style that is distinctively credited to him alone. The actor stands for the difference he was able to offer in the transition period of the 1980’s. He has sustained himself as a perfect actor because he has accepted each and every role and added his own distinctive touch. He is also attributed to be one of the few actors in Indian cinema to make an appearance in Hollywood films.This is a worthy reminder of his talent and the propensity that he has for characterization.
Anil Kapoor’s Early Years- Anil Kapoor was born on the 24th December, 1959 in Chembur Mumbai to Nirmal Kapoor and Surinder Kapoor, both native from Peshawar (present-day Pakistan). Surinder Kapoor used to be the secretary of Shammi Kapoor and in later years tuned a film producer. Anil Kapoor was an introvert and a loner with few friends. He attended the Our Lady of Perpetual Help School and then later on went on to attend the prestigious St. Xavier College in Mumbai. From his early days Anil was an ardent bollywood fan and idolized Raj Kapoor.
This idolization influenced the actor in a profound manner. He was also seen many at times mimicking the great Raj Kapoor. His film craze also landed him a role as child artist in Tu Payal mein geet, the film was never released. However he remained distracted during college and was removed from college in the second year for lack of attendance. His attempt to join the Pune Film Institute was also unsuccessful and the actor failed the written test. He then joined Roshan Taneja’s acting School.
Anil Kapoor Career- Anil Kapoor Film career took off with the film Hamare Tumhare (1979) directed by Umesh Mehra. The actor then went on to essay many minor roles in Hum Panch (1980) and Shakti (1982) and he got a leading role in the 1983 film Woh Saat Din in (1983). He also tried to make his debut with the Vamsa Vruksham and Mani Ratnam’s debut Kanada film Palavi Anupallavi. However his role as tapori in Yash Chopra’s Mashaal in (1983) won his first Filmfare Award in 1983 for best Supporting role. The character at the time was unconventional but soon became a fashion status and Tapori became a cult character in Hindi cinema. He then on essayed roles in films that went on to become commercial successes namely Meri Jang (1985) and Karma (1986)where he again played the role of a Tapori followed by Insaaf Ki Awaaz and Chamlei ki Shaddi. However his most notable performance as an actor came with the movie Mr India (1987) that was a major blockbuster and catapulted him to the status of a superstar.
His success continued and he bagged awards for his performances in Thikana, Ram Lakkhan, Parinda and a dual role of twins in Kishen Kanhaiya. His success continued in 1992.However in 1993 Roop ki Rani Chor ka Raja which was invariably a failure at the box office. Produced by Boney Kapoor this film to a certain extent dented the actor image as a Bollywood A lister. This however did not dent the actor’s confidence and he made a strong comeback and 1942: A love story. He appeared with a different performance in Rishikesh Mukherjee last commercial release in which he played the role of a woman played and enthralled audiences. The late 90’s saw him star in many films and he also starred in films that did not do to well at the box office. It was however towards the end of the 1990’s and 2000 that he became a bit more restrained about the selection of his roles. The result he evolved as a complete and versatile actor.
His films like Bhulandi and Karoobar got critical; acclaim. Nayak in (2001) is considered as one his best performance to date.He went on to star in performance in Calcutta Mail, My Wife’s Murder and Anees Bazmee No Entry. He proved his versatility in roles with Chocolate and Salaam- e- Ishq and Race. He also went to essay his first role in English movie with Slumdog Millionaire which was decorated with international awards including three Oscars. In 2010, Kapoor starred in the eighth season of the American television series 24, portraying Omar Hassan, President of the fictional Islamic Republic of Kamistan. He also appeared in the 2011 film Mission Impossible- Ghost Protocol.
Anil Kapoor upcoming movies- Anil Kapoor upcoming movies include the sequel to Shootout at Lokhandwala which is Shootout at Wadala where he essays the role of cop Inspector Isaque Bagwan. Contrary to reports earlier, his film Power has been halted and stays delayed. However his much awaited film Race 2 where he plays the role of Inspector Robert D'Costa (R.D.) is said to release on the 25th January, 2013.
Anil Kapoor Personal Life- Anil met wealthy and chic model, Sindhi-speaking Sunita Bhambhani, and married her in 1984. Since then they have given birth to 3 children, Kapoor has two daughters and a son Harshwardhan Kapoor. Kapoor’s elder daughter is actress Sonam Kapoor. Rhea Kapoor attended school in New York and is now a producer in Mumbai.
