Spice Jet overtakes Air India as the third largest domestic airlinerBudget Airliner Spice Jet overtook Air India as the third largest domestic airliner for February. The private player achieved this on the back on the big sale scheme that offered a million air tickets at a price of Rs 2,013/-. This offer helped the south based airliner to go past Jet Airways and Air India.
According to the latest figures issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Spice jet flew 20.4 percent of fliers in February as opposed to 18.4 percent in January. However Air India has stated that it is unfazed with the fact that Spice Jet has taken over as the third largest domestic airliner.
The public owned airliner stated that the company would not be able to sustain in the long run on the merit of discounts that it has offered. The company spokesperson stated that Air India was aware of the shift in the market share, “We were aware of the shift but in long term gain this strategy would be unsustainable.
The spokesperson also went on to state that discounts cause a major factor of market share. Our market share has remained untouched and we have recorded a fairly balanced performance for the months of February and March. He said that Spice Jet would surely record a similar performance for March as well on the back of its second discount policy.
